2024 Santa Clara County CERT Skills Day

130 CERT volunteers from around Santa Clara County gathered on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at the Sunnyvale Community Center to practice their skills. They were joined by 50 instructors and staff, and 40 BSA scouts and scout parents acting as “victims,” for a total of over 200 people.

Check-In and Briefing

Participants checked in and were greeted with coffee, juice, and breakfast foods, courtesy of donations from Costco and FoodMaxx. They got a welcome from the mayor of Sunnyvale and a briefing before the skills practice began.

Moulage

Scouts from several different local troops were decorated with fake wounds and blood (“moulage”) to act as victims in the medical and search skill areas.

Disaster Preparedness

Participants attended a refresher talk on disaster preparedness, following Campbell’s “Be Ready, Be Prepared” program. Many preparedness resources were on display for the participants. More details on the program are available on CampbellCERT.org.

Triage

Participants practiced evaluating survivors in a mass casualty situation and determining which ones to treat first, to do the greatest good for the greatest number.

Be Ready!

Disasters can strike at any time, often in surprising ways. The participants in this event are now that much better prepared to handle any disasters that may occur. You can join them! If you are a member of your city’s CERT team, make sure to take part in their occasional refresher training sessions. If you’re not, consider signing up for your city’s CERT training so that you can be ready to help your neighbors and community in a disaster!
